Emollients: Emollients are usually oil-based ingredients that are added to moisturisers to provide your skin with a smooth, soft, and supple appearance. Jojoba oil and coconut oil are some of the most commonly used emollients in moisturisers.
Occlusives: Occlusives form a barrier between your skin and the outer environment. This prevents the loss of water and moisture from your skin and keeps it hydrated. Some of the common occlusives used in moisturisers include argan oil, grapeseed oil, soybean oil, cocoa butter, and beeswax.
When to Use a Moisturiser?
Does your skin feel dry, tight, taut, and rough? Do you have moderate to severe peeling and flaking, itching, and cracking? If yes, then you definitely need a good moisturiser for your skin. You may also need to change your moisturiser, depending on different weather conditions and seasons.
When choosing a moisturiser for your skin, opt for one that contains plant oils or nut or seed oils. These oils contain essential fatty acids and are quickly absorbed into your skin. They form a barrier between your skin and the outer environment to retain moisture. As a result, your skin feels smooth and soft.
Here are some oils that good moisturisers contain:
Macadamia Oil: Macadamia oil is not only great for moisturising your skin but also contains a high content of fatty acids, which can help regenerate your skin. It forms a barrier that helps reduce trans-epidermal water loss from the skin.
Jojoba Oil: Jojoba oil has amazing antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also very close to our natural skin oil and keeps the skin smooth, soft, and well moisturised. The best thing about this oil is that it absorbs easily and doesn’t leave the skin feeling greasy. It also improves the suppleness, elasticity, and protective abilities of your skin.
Rosehip Oil: Rosehip oil contains vitamin A, which is great for softening and hydrating skin. It also keeps wrinkles at bay and reduces the signs of aging. Rosehip oil also contains omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids and vitamin F. It helps speed up the skin repair, healing, and regeneration process.
Hydrating, as the name suggests, is a way to increase the water content of your skin. You need an ample amount of water in your skin to keep it looking fresh, soft, and supple. When choosing a hydrating serum for your skin, you are essentially just providing the skin with humectants. You will need other products to seal the hydration you are providing your skin with the serum.
When to Use a Hydrating Serum?
If your skin is dehydrated, you need to use a hydrating serum. Dehydration is a common skin condition caused by the lack of water in your skin as opposed to a deficiency of natural oils. It can happen to someone with any skin type because of too much trans-epidermal water loss. Dehydrated skin looks dull and dry and is more prone to wrinkles. It shows superficial lines and feels rough to the touch. If your skin is dehydrated, you should look for a hydrating serum containing the following ingredients:

Aloe Vera Extract: Aloe vera is one of the best natural products with healing and skin-preservation qualities. It helps soothe chapped and broken skin, and is ideal for sensitive skin. It keeps your skin well hydrated by reducing water loss. In addition, it provides your skin with moisture and plenty of antioxidants to keep it fresh, smooth, and young.
Hydrating vs. Moisturising – What Does Your Skin Need?
So, does your skin need a hydrating or a moisturising treatment?
If you want your skin to look soft, smooth, hydrated, and glowing, then you need to be both hydrating and moisturising in tandem. Hydrating prevents the formation of the signs of premature aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles. Moisturising locks in the hydration so the water content in your skin can be retained. So, regardless of your skin type, you need to keep your skin well hydrated and moisturised.
You may need a rich moisturiser during winters when the atmosphere is too dry. It will trap hydration in your skin and prevent it from dryness. If you have dry skin, you can also add a face oil on top of a moisturiser for extra protection.
Opt for lightweight, non-greasy moisturisers in hot and humid weather. It will keep your skin clear of too much sebum, which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts.
